Have you ever used a calculator with solar cells, a device that which does not require batteries? As long as there is enough light, it seems to work forever. With green technology continuing to develop, new electronic devices powered by solar energy such as solar calculators, electricity chargers, and solar lanterns are popping up. The “Solar Revolution,” the idea that we can all use free electricity from the sun, seems to be upon us.
S-ENERGY, a spun-off from Samsung Electronics, is Korea’s representative photovoltaic (PV) module manufacturer. S-ENERGY is a pioneer and an industry leader in Korea’s PV industry. As such, every achievement the company has accomplished has marked a milestone of the nation’s PV industry. Especially in the building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) market, the company enjoys unrivaled market position with its market share reaching 70%. S-Energy built the nation’s first green village in Jeju Island and Kwangju, constructed the nation’s first MW power plant and commercialized BIPV modules for the first time in Korea.
The main product of S-ENERGY is the PV module. PV module is a packaged, connected assembly of PV cells, which convert sunlight directly into electricity, and is used as a component of a larger PV system. S-ENERGY’s PV modules boast long durability and high strength. Since its PV modules are fitted with iron tempered glass and framed with aluminum, they are able to withstand the severe weather conditions and damage from hard objects such as hailstones and tree branches. The company guarantees ten years of workmanship warranty and 80% of minimum output power 30 years after the installation.
Small but Strong Company
S-ENERGY’s PV modules have been highly recognized in the global markets as well. Since its first exports to Germany in 2008, S-ENERGY has made tremendous efforts to increase its presence in overseas markets. As a result, exports make up of more than 80% of company’s entire revenue. Major export destinations of S-ENERGY are Japan, the US, and Europe as well as emerging markets including Africa, Oceania and South East Asia. In 2010, even Photon, the European Photovoltaic Magazine recognized its excellence of technology. S-ENERGY’s PV modules were selected as world’s top third PV module among 500 companies.
S-ENERGY continuously makes efforts to expand into high value-added projects such as overseas EPC systems and plant construction. It won the Elk grove project in California, U.S., which will be completed in 2012. It also won a construction order of 5MW solar power plant from Malaysia. Recently, S-ENERGY set up an ambitious goal of achieving earnings of KRW one trillion by 2015. “By achieving KRW one trillion sales, I feel we can grow into a small but strong company,” said the CEO.
